The Michigan Reining Horse Association’s Caywood Show and Futurity was held in Midland, Michigan on September 15th at the Midland Fairgrounds. This three-day event boasted 429 entries in classes ranging from Green Reiner and Green Horse to $1,000 added in both the Novice Horse Non Pro and Open division.
The highlight of the weekend was the Caywood & MRHA MBBO Futurity.
Prize money paid back to exhibitors totaled over $56,000 for the weekend with the entrants working hard for their part of the $27,000 in added money and the many prizes awarded in the dual Futurity Event.
Judging this event were Ed Bricker from Evans City, Pennsylvania and Sherry Dooley from Georgetown, Kentucky.
Gabe
Hutchins, Markham, Illinois and WOUND BY JUICE, owned by Smart Like Juice, Inc.
captured the Open and Intermediate Open Caywood Futurity, marking a 146.5 edging
out 2nd place winner Tim Katona on It Whiz What It Whiz by a half
point. Gabe and his fancy 3 year old went home with $3,258.26 in prize money, 2
Morrison Bronzes and 2 beautiful show headstalls. Chuck Halker, Columbus Grove,
Ohio and The Big Chex, owned by Bob Sutherland won the Limited Open division
with a score of 144 and also amassed an NRHA Bronze, and prize money from
placings in the Open and Intermediate Open division to earn $1,829.62. Coming
in second place, in the Limited Open division, was Matt Findly, Whitesboro,
Texas on Soda Pop owned by Brian Hunt.
Veteran
competitor, Jessica Keller, Fayetteville, Tennessee, won the Caywood Non Pro
Futurity class on Corona Lite Chex with a score of 146, and winning $1,759.97
for her run. Kelle Smith from Belle Center, Ohio was reserve champion on her
Topsail Whiz mare, Hulahoops, who was also an MBBO eligible horse. Kelle took
home $1,368.87 for her efforts.
Mitch
Mosher, Kawkawlin, Michigan and his Whizard Jac gelding, Mark Of A Whizard,
scored a 144 to capture both the Intermediate and Limited Non Pro divisions.
Mitch and “Lark” were definitely on a roll with wins in the MBBO Futurity
classes also.
The
2007 Open and Intermediate Open MBBO Champion Horse was
It Whiz What It Whiz by
Whizard Jac. “Honey”,
homegrown and raised by Doug and Pam
Rooney
of Howell Michigan, is out of Elderberry Holly by Elderberry Ace “Honey came to
us early in her 2 year old year, very small and very intimidated. Doug put his
confidence in us to let us train her at her own pace. As time went on, Honey
grew and matured into a very confident, strong mare, she has the mental attitude
to match any of the boys at the farm. “She’s my show horse”, Tim commented as
his draw was approaching. It Whiz What It Whiz, was the last horse out of 46
entries in the class. Her first outing, an NRHA show in Sunbury Ohio, showed
Tim where more work was needed. “If we knew then,
what we know now, Congress would have definitely been an option for this mare.
But when entries were due, she still hadn’t shown us she would be ready for that
level of competition. Marking a 146 here, she would most assuredly been
competitive there. “Doug and Pam have been the greatest people to work for and
have become very valued friends. Trust is the most important element you can
have between a trainer and owner and we are thankful that the Rooney’s gave us
the opportunity and that trust to get “Honey” to where she is today" , where she
belongs, in the Winner’s photo!
Rick Weaver of Fairview Pennsylvania tied for Reserve honors in the Open and Intermediate Open MBBO Futurity on Uncinched Melody, owned by Jeff and Julie Holler of New York. The bay filly by Backcinch was a Michigan bred filly and brought Rick and Hollers up for a chance at the MBBO monies. Rick, Jeff and Julie took home a total of $3,301.96 on their Michigan eligible filly! Tying for Reserve in both the Open and Intermediate Open MBBO was Gene Munger from Freeland Michigan on Tuckin My Cash by Tucknicolor, raised by Gene out of his mare, Cash For Dollars, and purchased as a 2 year old by Bill & Margaret Shaffner of Saginaw Michigan. Winning the Limited Open Division was Mitch Mosher on Mark Of A Whizard scoring 144 for a Bronze and $1,165.94 for the class title. Katie Smallegan on Kris Hansen’s, Dontbeyankinmychain, by Rowdy Yankee, took Reserve placing for a paycheck of $874.46.
In
the MBBO Non Pro Futurity, Mitch Mosher captured all 3 division championships on
Mark of a Whizard, by Whizard
Jac. “Lark” was purchased from Tammy
Boughan of
Lima Ohio. Tammy had put in
all
the riding during Lark’s 2 year old year and sold him
to Mitch in January of his 3 year old year. Mitch, a long time customer and
friend of the Katonas, brought him to Tim
& Cindy to finish his training with hopes of a 3 year
old Non Pro Futurity horse. “This horse was capable of being an Open Futurity
horse and I told Mitch, if he didn’t want to show him, I would”, laughed Tim.
Mitch and Lark proved to be a great team and had just come off of a major win at
the 2007 Tradition Futurity, where Mitch took
home a Bronze Trophy for his win in the
Limited Non Pro Futurity and also winning the Gelding
Award Bronze. To date, Mark of A Whizard and Mitch
have amassed a total of 8 Bronzes and over $11,000 in earnings.
2nd place in the MBBO Non Pro Futurity was Kelle Smith on Hulahoops adding another $1,258.14 in her pocket for having a Michigan Bred horse.
2nd in the Intermediate Non Pro division was no stranger to the MBBO, Natasha Thomas of Saginaw Michigan on Boomin Whiz, adding $2,098.79 to her earnings for her Caywood Futurity entry.
The Limited Non Pro Reserve Champion was Peter Wrenn of Swartz Creek,Michigan on Roosters Mint earning $909.44 for his run.
